Freezer Pak
Another job done. The meat from our four deer is all cut up and in our freezers:
- 29 rump & sirloin roasts
- 55 lbs. sausage
- 10 lbs. meatballs
- 70 x 1.5 lbs. ground meat packages.
Our first meal with Manitoba harvested venison was delicious - Sweet 'n' Sour meatballs - everyone agreed the wild venison taste was even less than what we had from last year.
So we're through that learning curve and it has proved successful! Will we have enough meat for the year? We'll have to wait and see, but our guessimates are rather doubtful ... we'll put it all into the record book for future reference.
To God be All Glory!
Edit note:
We've tried the sausage. Everyone agrees it is good!

Kellogs Cereal Offer
Not all coupons are valid in Canada, but if you go here you can print off up to six coupons per computer for a one $1 coupon off of any Kellog's brand cereal.
The coupon does not state that they are only valid in the USA like so many coupons do - watch for an edit note once I've tried this coupon, but it should work.
In addition to that, if you shop at the Real Canadian Superstore they often have an instore coupon worth $3.00 off a purchase of three boxes of Kellog's cereal. Usually there are some boxes priced about $2.97 - $3.48. It does work to stack the 3/$1 manufacturer's coupons with the $3.00 instore coupon to get a total of $6.00 off of three boxes of Kellog's cereal = about 2 boxes free.
1. Print the manufacturer's coupons.
2. Watch the sales.
3. Use instore coupon from Superstore.
4. Stock up on cereals.
Kellog's coupons expire 12/24/2008
Just thought I'd pass along this "deal" to my faithful readers.
Edit note: All the Kellog's cereals are priced high this week at Real Canadian Superstore though they did have the $3 off/3 coupon. Keep checking though - this is a regular instore coupon and they usually will have some of their cereals priced lower. I just didn't need cereals this week so I opted to leave that for another week in expectation of finding better pricing.

Ample Provision
We have reason to give praise to Jehovah Jireh, our Provider:
We now have not just one, but four, yes that's 4, deer to put into the freezer. That's enough to get creative - we're hoping to be making some sausage and some jerky this time around. It'll be another learning curve no doubt, but we're up for that.
Corbyn got a second using his Dad's tag and another perfect, free-hand shot. That was a very neat scenario where Daddy & all his six boys were able to get in on "the hunt". They had gone out to meet Ken's brothers at their hunting camp near our yard when they spotted this young buck - Ken stopped, Corbyn got out & loaded, walked around the suburban & took a free-hand shot at the young buck that was still "posing" for him. One clean shot and the second deer was "in the bag". The littles would have normally not been able to witness the hunt at their young age, but this opportunity just presented itself.
Carsyn harvested his first deer - with the muzzleloader & in company of his Uncle Gil (who has the photos on his camera - we'll get them at a later date). He too dropped his target with just one good clean shot.
Carsyn's doe was the third animal harvested and then they were given the carcass of yet another good size buck by a friend of the brother's who really didn't need the meat, but was just out for the hunt with expectation of finding someone who would be able to use the meat.
So that "job" is done. It's good to have it behind us now so we can get on with cutting & wrapping ... and then other things!
Good life learning!

Necessity Invents Free Meals
Necessity is the mother of invention ...
Yesterday, it happened at our house. I wanted to make a stir-fry for supper, but I found I had only carrots and a half head of cabbage to go with the (free) chicken breast I chopped up. Just carrots & cabbage could have sufficed, but I usually like to have a bit more variety like zuchinni or something - it dawned on me that I had a half of a spaghetti squash sitting in my fridge from supper the night before.
Sure thing, peeled & diced & tossed in with the stir-fry it made for a perfect addition to the dish.
BONUS - it's healthy!
The added BONUS is that spaghetti squash is super easy to grow (in the past I remember growing wa-ay too much and end up giving it away or tossing it into compost in late spring ...). But the fact of the matter is that variety of squash lasts way longer into the winter than zuchinni - giving us more opportunities for "free" meals.
Whoo hoo! I was excited to discover this "invention"!
You better believe it - I'll be planting more spaghetti squash next spring than I had planned on.

It's A FIRST!
Energizing Shake
Here's a great shake that pleasantly offers a lot of nutritional benefits:
Energizing Shake
1 cup milk
1 Tbsp. blackstrap molasses
1 tsp. honey
1/2 tsp. instant coffee granules, optional
2 heaping Tbsp. hemp hearts
14-16 ice cubes
Blend until smooth. Serve & enjoy!
The molasses could also be considered optional though it does add minerals & iron into your diet. I've found that this shake gives me a significant increase in energy - a good thing for the last trimester of my pregnancy, to be sure!
Edit note:
Now I can testify as a nursing mother, this shake continues to give me boundless energy ... Baby Faith and I both get grouchy if I run out of hemp hearts.
Here is another version of my morning shake:
1 cup milk
1 Tsp. blackstrap molasses
2 tsp. honey
10 drops liquid stevia
1 tbsp. coconut oil
1 tbsp. peanut butter
1/2 tsp. instant coffee granules, optional
4 heaping Tbsp. hemp hearts
1 1/2 tsp. dutch cocoa
14-16 ice cubes
I'm enjoying the different flavors & the knowledge that I can put so many healthing ingredients into my diet so pleasantly and easily.

What A Week!
Last Saturday a loader came to level our new orchard area:
The result became a huge sandbox offering hours of SAND FUN:
Tuesday the loader was supposed to return to finish the job, but he had a breakdown and has yet to return.
Wednesday a visit to Grandpa & Grandma's who are now so very much closer. We're thankful that little trip worked out for Wednesday because ...
Thursday morning we were greeted with snow. Even a skiff on these hills is enough to go sledding = SNOW FUN !
Cattle grazing through the snow on the hay field:
By Friday AM we have WINTER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A view from our dining room window:
A new awning?

Come Peek Inside Our Home
Finally a few "after" pictures to let you see how we've made this house our home:
Our livingroom - just off the dining & kitchen area ...
Master bedroom ... (note this room still has the blue paint, as does the bedroom that the twins occupy - it just "fit". For now anyway.)
Our smallest bedroom, shared by Brayden & Timothy for now ...
A small part of the basement featuring a "firepole" that was mastered by all three littles the first day we were here:
This even feels like home to us now already. Yes, there have been some surprises. Nice ones, very nices ones and ... even a few disappointments and concerns along the way as we've "discovered" more about the place & the area, but through it all God gives peace because we KNOW without a doubt that He led us here for a purpose. We just have more opportunities to trust Him.

Anticipation
Waiting at the road to welcome our dear friends, the Derksens, from Saskatchewan ...
Going for a hike on one of our trails:
And what a great time was had by all - the 13th annual year in a row on October 31 that we've enjoyed fellowship at our country retreat - albeit, this time at a different retreat!
